Prenatal Massage

our therapists take extra care to ensure our pregnancy massage clients are comfortable. Sideline positioning with supportive, soft cushions is used to alleviate the extra strain on the lower back and pelvic areas when the pressure of massage techniques are applied. Extra strain in these areas can cause unnecessary back or abdominal pain, so naturally we want to avoid any potential discomfort.

Through the second trimester, you may prefer to lie on your back with a small, cushioned wedge placed under one hip to provide a slight elevation. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, your therapist may utilize such massage techniques as reflexology, Swedish massage or certain techniques that address your specific requests and needs.

Carrying a baby inside you changes your center of gravity and puts a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, meaning your pelvic joints are less stable, and it also changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that the extra weight you’re carrying and you may end up with an aching lower back. Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health.

Increased blood flow to uterus, placenta and heart

During pregnancy, our blood volume may increase to up to 60% in comparison to before pregnancy. As we progress further, our uterus enlarges, presses deep inside our pelvis, and thus return of blood flow may be inhibited.

Enhancement of proper posture & alignment

As baby grows within our bodies, our posture and alignment may be compromised. The extra weight contributes to extra tension and sometimes muscle spasms. Through massage our muscle tone and flexibility is increased. Making us more capable of carrying the load of pregnancy upon our joints and muscles.

Alleviation of common pregnancy physical complaints/ailments

Some of the common complaints from head to toe may include headaches, sinusitis, numbness and/or tingling of hand or fingers, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, shortness of breath, edema/swelling of lower extremity, sciatica, constipation, indigestion, heartburn, muscular discomfort and/or pain in hips, back, chest, shoulders and legs, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, itchy skin, and pregnancy rash.

Time of self-nurturing

Carrying and growing a baby requires a lot of energy. Take time to receive emotional and physical support by nonsexual, nurturing, and therapeutic touch. Giving back to yourself is equally as important.
